cooked ham

Hi all

I was given a lovely piece of ham on the bone for Christmas, which went over its use by date yesterday. Please could somebody inform me as to what I do with it! Can it be frozen?

Many thanks

MM

  • Yes it can be frozen, but make a note somewhere on the packaging that you need to eat it within a day when you defrost it.

You could use it to make a dish like a pie or pasta bake and then freeze that.

I'd boil the bone up for stock and freeze that too;)
  • Just noticed that it states on the packaging not to freeze. How odd!

    Should I do it anyway?

  • Mmm, I'm not sure now. Maybe it has been previously frozen in which case it would be dangerous to refreeze. But, maybe it is just a warning that the quality/texture of the ham will suffer if it is frozen. Sorry I can't be of more help.

If it has not been cooked then i would think you should be able to cook it and freeze it. If the package tells you not to refreeze it then it maybe has been frozen before so it is perhaps not a good idea. Even if you dont freeze it then you should be able to eat it in the next few days , just go by the smell and look of it.
