I get my chicken from our local farm shop, and I thought the chooks were raised there. But this thread made me nosy, so I looked on the farm website, and they don't raise poultry, and get their birds from
this farm. It looks quite nice, but it's a bit too far for me to check out.

Might try and find a farm nearer that raises their own birds.
Kitschy packington is really nice there are a few farms up that way My local farm shop stocks a few bits from there and packington moor :D

Thanks for this - I try to get good chicken, as it's about the only meat I eat, and I like to think I'm eating happy chicken, so that's reassuring :)
  • We stopped buying supermarket chicken some time ago. We are on a tight budget but still feel it is better to get our chickens from a good butcher - they have so much more meat on and our butcher has a blackboard up which tells us where any meat comes from (all within a short distance).
    Be nice to each other

  • I'm ashamed to say I'm buying rubbish supermarket meat right now, the only place we have near us is Asda and it's awful. I live in chav land so wrongly assumed that there wouldn't be a good butcher round here - lived here a couple of years and miss my old one. Finally got around to googling and found what sounds like 2 fantastic trad. butchers on the outskirts of the town. Will be off to have a look round this weekend. :-)

  • Just an aside - nothing to do with the quality of chicken as such - but whilst the advertisers might have dreamed up Willow Farm, Oakham is a real place - it's the county town of Rutland and 9 miles from my home. But definitely doesn't seem to be home to large quantities of poultry!
  • I buy free range chickens from the supermarket..its the only place that i can get them, after checking out the 4 butchers in town AND a farm shop only 10min drive away, i was surprised to find that not one of them sold free range chickens,The butchers and farm shop only sold caged birds..shocking(especialy as the farm shop sells its own reared beef and lamb and even has their own butchers on site.
