My driving license is old style and from a previous address.

    Hi Loobs40

Firstly, if you do end up having to order 6 months worth of Bank Statements, you have a right under law not to pay more than £10 for the whole request. Even if you order a years supply! I can't remember whether it is part of the Banking Code, but if anyone does quote you £30 then get them to confirm with a superviser.

Regarding the paperless irony, I understand your frustration and know that the likes of Accord Mortgages encourage brokers to scan and email the Application and supporting documents. However, I am afraid they would be likely to prefer a scan of the paper copy.

Not part of the banking code. All the banking code says is :

"We will normally give you a statement every month,
every three months or, in any case, at least once a year.
You can ask us to give you account statements more
often than is normally available on your type of account,
but there may be a charge for this service."

I don't drive either. The DVLA fail to mention any fine on their web site where it mentions how to change the details and obtain an upto date photo licence.
    http://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/photocard_licences.htm#3

I don't have enough proof to apply for a photo licence anyway. I will need somebody to validate my photo.
A Lost of those who can certify my photograph:- Necessary if you don't have a current passport.

A local business person or shopkeeper, a librarian, a professionally qualified person for example, a lawyer, teacher or engineer,a police officer, a bank or building society officer, civil servant, a minister of religion, a magistrate; and a local councillor or an MP (AM, MEP and MSP). You have to have known these persons for at least two years and they can't be relations.

Edit If they prosecute me I will have more chance of being able to get the magistrates or police officers/lawyers signitures.

I have bit the bullet and just applied for the bank statements. I haven't got time to 'discuss' with the Cahoot customer service robots. In future though, I will be more careful when deciding to subscribe to internet accounts/bills.

    thanks for your input y'all

My tax notification as proof of identity worked well with the Halifax for a cash ISA. Congratulations to their staff, they were superb . I did point out minor ambiguities in their documentation that they had ideas on.
I should have said in my original post that, proof of identity was harder than proof of address. Everyone sends you bills, A copy of your birth certificate is worth nothing. The issuing authorities won't tell you how many times a copy of a birth certificate has been requested. I don't know how an original birth certificate would be treated.

I suspect a birth certificate won't work for most women. Something to do with showing thier maiden name ? ;)

You don't have to change your maiden name. The birth certificate can also count for the mentioned parents too. It is a pity that they are so easily obtained and worthless at proving who you are.

I'm currently going through applying for a mortgage and they said I need my passport, a wage slip and a utility bill.

They said to me I could use a mobile phone bill, then when I took it they said we don't accept mobile phone bills

They said I could take a bank statemnet but I too would have to go to the bank and request one.
Would a Certificate of Motor Insurance suffice?
I would have used my own initiative if someone would have told me to!
  • Ask them for a written list of acceptable documents if they haven't given you one already. Usually they are passport, and bank and credit card statements and utility bills dated no older than three months that carry both your name and address, benfit books or statements.
They won't accept store card statements or mobile phone statements. You have to request your bank statement yourself because of the data protection act.

Mobile phone bills are not acceptable.

Yes, as long as the address is on it.
