HELP... can't connect to internet

Hi there

Not sure what's happened but... we've got two PCs in our house. One of which (this one) is connecting fine to our Post Office wireless connection. The other one, shows the white screen when I click on Internet Explorer. The USB dongle seems to be working (signal strength displayed as Very Good), I'm switched the Netgear DG834GSP router on and off again - still no luck. I'm running XP SP3. During the past day or so, both PCs have displayed an "IP address conflict" error message.

Any ideas?!?

Thanks!

  • Have looked in Event Viewer and now even more confused. Event ID: 4198.

The system detected an address conflict for IP address ___ with the system having network hardware address__. The local interface has been disabled.

    Any suggestions gratefully received!!!
  • Does this Microsoft article help?

  • Thanks - this helps a bit - my mum has a new laptop which I used over our wireless network so I'm guessing the conflict is from there. I don't really understand what to do though to resolve it!!!

you need to phone your isp :)
  • Just tried ringing ISP. But couldn't get them to understand that we have 2 PCs, one of which has some kind of IP conflict!!!

phone them again and tell them that you can't connect to the internet and can they take you through what the problems could be :)

No point as it is nothing to do with the ISP. The router is connecting to the ISP but not issuing IP's to the various PC's connected to it. Check that DCHP is enabled on the router.

  • How do I check that DCHP is enabled on the router? Also, I'm using our wireless router via our second PC to send this so something must be working?!? Sorry - I'm not a techie!!!

You need to read the user manual. If you haven't got one, download it from the Netgear support website.

  • ISP has advised "hard resetting" the router and then leaving it for a couple of hours to reinstall itself. Worth a try I guess.
