"Easy" pattern wanted for doll/soft toy

Having looked at the nappy cake thread, I've decided to make one for my sister who's just told me she's expecting. The baby's not due until August, so I have plenty of time to prepare.
I'd love to make my own soft toy/doll to sit on top (obviosly we don't know yet if it's a boy or a girl, but she should find out when she has her 20 week scan). My problem is that I've never used a sewing machine, never mind owned one - I wouldn't know what to do with one. So, anything I make will be hand-sewn. Can anyone please point me in the direction of "easy" patterns to attempt?
Thanks, JB x

Thanks sethsgran. Unfortunately, I can't knit. I tried teaching myself some 21 years ago - from a book but reversing all of the instructions as I'm left-handed. I did manage a baby cardigan, but it took me forever and probably wasn't all that good!some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it

I'm left handed but knit right-handed as my Aunt showed me. Have you tried having a go that way? I've just taught DD who is left-handed as well to knit the same way as me.
If you google left handed knitting instructions you should find a video.Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended

luxor posted a link on the moneysaving old style forum for felt toys. I should be able to do something similar without a pattern, they look easy enough!
Should add - I'll be sewing everything rather than glueing; wouldn't want bits of felt coming off in baby's mouth.some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it
