    Morning Peachy.

You could look at the NDL site as they have a letter you can send to creditor requesting they write of the amount you owe them based on your circumstances. I feel this would be your final option before bankrupsy

  • Hi hun, one thing that struck me is your water meter, you are paying £28 a month? this seems an awful lot just for you, I am not on a meter and pay rates of £26 a month for a family of 4, can you look into this?

Also do you really need to spend £20 a month on haircuts?, your gas and electric are high just for you, I appreciate this is because you are on a prepayment meter, is there anyway you can get this changed?

You spend £179 on other travel over and above your petrol costs, what is this for and can this be reduced?

the other thing that struck me was the pet insurance/vets bills at 65 a month. Is there a PDSA you can go to and get what needs done for a donation as you are on benefits? Also if you look online there are pet food merchants on the net who do big sacks of dry stuff really cheap that would last a long time.

    hope this helps.

I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
  • I dont know about where you live but where I am it isnt the local newspapers that advertise bankruptcy it is the financial paper (the one that goes to the banks etc) - it certainly isnt advertised in the normal press. Check with your local cab - they will tell you which paper the advert goes in.
  • The 179 for other travel is because I have this paid straight from my DLA to motability finance for a car. Without this I wouldn't get anywhere, it's a 20 mile round trip to the nearest town and 50 mile to my parents, dad can't rive anymore so I have to visit them. The £20 for haircuts is per year, my mistake, 4 haircuts a year @ £5.

I have been ill since an accident at work in 1982 and have used a wheelchair since 97, although I have spells where I am less ill they rarely last for more than a few weeks and then I go downhill again really quickly. I also have a congenital problem with my spine that adds to the problem as well. I retrained after I had to give up my nursing career to become an IT tutor but after my husband died suddenly at 46 couldn't manage work and day to day living without his support. It's very doubtful that I will be well enough to work again.

I am now going to contact the water company to see if i can change the tarrif likewise the gas and electric. Will also ring the CAB to see whether a bankruptcy noticw would go in the local paper.

Thanks to all you lovely people who have replied, to be able to 'talk' about the situation has been such a relief.

Thank you to you all for your replies.

My dad doesn't live with me and has no idea of the situation I'm in. If I went bankrupt it would be in the local paper which he reads from cover to cover and would certainly see it in there and I would never be able to live with myself if anything happened to him because of it.

My friend started to do hers in a different county court so that people wouldn't see it in the local paper. She got all her bank charges back first, perhaps that could be something that you start with? (If you've had any in the past 6 years.) That gave her a lovely little bonus that will help, and it meant she didn't have to go down the BR route after all.

I think if you are paying £1 to your creditors, I don't believe they can refuse it.

Go to the CAB for free advice. Talk to your family and friends - they'll be more supportive than you think. Can you take in a lodger? Can you get a part time job? Can you knit or sew or make things that you can sell?

I too am on my own with 2 cats and when I've been depressed, if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have got out of bed in the morning - even if I did end up going back to bed. My debt was £35k.

You're in the right place. Good luck.

  • Hi Peachblossom

Just wanted to stop by and say Hello. Some really good advice here already. Re your Dad, I know how you feel, but I am sure that if he knew how worried you were about all this he would want you to take any steps necessary - he wouldn't want you to worry this much I am sure.

Yes, if you're on benefit, you don't need pet insurance as the pdsa will look after that for you and they'll come and collect the cat(s) too if they need treatment. This would be the first thing I'd get rid of. (The insurance, not the cats!) And it would cover your shortfall.

Do you get motability? I see you're in a wheelchair, and that must restrict what work you can do. I believe there are other wheelchair users on here and they will also be able to help and guide in what you can do.

    Hi Peachblossom,
Not a lot of advice from me but all the best for whatever you decide to do.
BR may well be the best way to go......YOU are the important thing here.....NOT the debts! I've not been through the process myself, but there are people who are there for YOU, to help you with every step....and we are all here for support too.
