How to clean this coat?

My son has been sick all over his brother's dry-clean only coat. The coat is 80% wool/20% nylon and the lining is 100% nylon. Could I get away with putting this on a wool wash? There is no way the dry-cleaners would take it. I have it soaking in plain water at present and wonder if I could risk adding washing soda as it smells dreadful!

Thanks for your advice, Ness.

Well - I'd send it for dry-cleaning - thats what they do, clean stuff! I'm sure they've had a lot worse. Don't worry about it - if you've soaked it in water at least all the carrots and chunks will have come off.

Wrap it in a bag and take it into your local dry-cleaners.
  • Yes, you can wash it in the washing machine. I have done this with all my wool coats, they have all turned out fine. Do it on a cool wash and a short spin.

  • I'm sure you could give it a gentle wash on a wool setting and then perhaps send it to the dry cleaners if it needs pressing and finishing.

I have done this with one of XH's suits after a rather disasterous company Christmas Dinner followed by coach trip home !!

I think I would have sponged off any obvious 'bits' and then taken to the cleaners.

by soaking it in cold water any damage will be done already.. the waterproofness of the wool will be compromised.

Chuck it in the washer on a wool wash. it'll be fine.. I got run over, yes by a car and landed in the biggest deepest coldest muddiest puddle you could ever imagine! and threw my 100% wool coat on the wool cycle and it was fine, if a little less waterproof and a little softer. My daughters old Boden duffle coat was forever in the wash.. you've nothing to lose, unless you wash it on a boil.. in which case it would fit the cat!!

oh.. you can buy lanolin to re-waterproof things.. it isn't ideal but works better than nothing.. and don't use soap deterrgent it strips away even more of the lanolin from the wool, you need a soap free deterrgent.

Thankyou, I have some lanolin from my nappy days. Silly question, but how do I know if detergent is soap-free? Is bog-standard tesco washing powder okay? I do have some wool wash somewhere maybe, must look.
