Hi Miss Grumpy ... love the name, maybe we're twins!
I'm a teacher too and when I did some private tuition (many years ago) I found my local tax office were VERY helpful, offering advice. Assuming it is still the same, you will need to fill in a tax return form (self-assessment) at the end of your tax year. Make sure you keep receipts for any expenses (advertising costs, petrol if you travel etc) as you can offset this against earnings. My dh works p/t for the Local Authority and p/t self-employed and he says the paper work is a bit tedious but fairly easy! You should also keep a diary (separate from your personal one) showing the dates/places/people you are babysitting for, as the tax office can request evidence like this and if you keep work commitments with personal diary you might be somewhat embarrassed if the tax man/woman asks to see it (as happened to dh)! It might also be easier for book keeping purposes if you open a separate savings PO/bank/BS account for your self employed earnings. The most important thing is to keep good records and write them up every month rather than wait until the end of the year and have to deal with a muddle of paper! HTH

are you self employed or are you employed by the agency?
if you are employed by the agency they will deal with the tax issues
if you are self employed you need to register with the HMRC within three months of starting.0
