Haggling in John Lewis

Has anyone tried this? I might be looking to spend £900 on a laptop in there, non-sale. Do you think there will be any scope for haggling the price down?

Have you googled the make and model number to see what is the lowest price it is sold for? That will tell you what sort of price to offer. It is then up to them - but ask to speak to the manager is the salesman is unhelpful. I have had a reduction for an item as it was the last one they had.0

Also worth noting that sometimes things are exclusive to John Lewis.
They do price match to certain companies. I tried to get them to price match for a Webber BBQ - same model, make etc, but it was cheaper in another store but some miles away. The only difference was that the lid was a different colour (black in John Lewis, cream everywhere else).
The colour didn't bother me, but when I asked them to price match I was informed that that colour was exclusive to John Lewis and hence they couldn't price match because it wasn't like for like. That's how they got out of trying to price match with me.0 -
i bought an lcd tv for my sons xmas and when i went in there was an offer on an other tv which gave you a free hd lead and setanta card slot thing free with that tv which was the same price as the one i bought so i asked very politely if i could have the free items with my tv or even just the setanta card but it was a no no! I then told them i had been offered extras with a tv in Currys a hd lead etc and they were basically like well go to Currys! No luck with that one so i asked if i could maybe have a wee reduction to make the price a nice even number but no! And i was in the store for ages hoping if i took time he would say ok to get the sale rather than me walking away and it wasn't a cheap tv over £650 and i told him if i decided to buy it would be cash!! but no luck at all!And that was a manager he said that unless the item is ex-display/last one of a discontinued range/box damaged etc they couldn't reduce it! I was using tips from this site that say ask for accessories rather than a reduction! I wasn't to bothered anyway as at that time there price was the best on the high street for my tv anyway! And i have a feeling the manager knew that to!But there was no give or take at all:(
I'm not saying you won't get a reduction or some freebies i just wanted to let you know my experience a few weeks ago!!
Good luck with your purchase!

Thanks everyone! Have just found it £100 cheaper in PCWorld, but I know which shop I'd rather deal with so may try to haggle them down and if not just head off to PCWorld

Make sure it is also £100 cheaper in the store as well and not just online as John Lewis don't price match with online prices.0 -
You won't get a discount in a large chain for cash as it's expensive to handle.0
