I'm a doctor in nhs. i currently do not pay any pension. i opted out of the scheme after paying for 4 years.
When i did my first job i was paid to a slightly different name( i didn't have a N I number) because of the confusion in my surname. Then after that i got paid with the different surname and the pension paid for the first job was not carried into my pensions.
My question is whether i could claim back the pension money for my first job.
Thanks.
Dr P Balaji.

It is crucial that you get in touch with Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs and get your record put straight - get all your contributions credited to your own account.

Is there any reason you have opted out of one of the best pension schemes in the UK?0 -

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

Talk to your professional body, the BMA, it has specialist financial advisors in its BMA Services division. That's what you pay your subscription for..................

No, you can't claim the contributions back. Nor would you want to, it would be a bad deal.drpbalaji1960 wrote: »I'm a doctor in nhs. i currently do not pay any pension. i opted out of the scheme after paying for 4 years.

But you can make sure they put the records straight to make sure you have full credit for the four years. Your employer should do that by liaising with the NHS Pensions Agency, no problem. But how do you know they aren't recorded correctly? Who told you?
And yes, opt back in immediately!0 -
Get back in the pension ASAP. Its worth a fortune to you at very little cost.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Before I left the NHS last November at the age of 63, I was informed by NHS pensions that I would get a lump sum, back pay to the age of 60 of my preserved pension, and a very small pension. I had only preserved pension as I was not paying into the NHS pension scheme this time round. I have worked for other companies most of my working life, but happened to be working for the NHS from 2002 to 2009.I have received all these monies, but made the mistake of querying something. They have now told me that I have to pay back the £2,500 that was my back pay of preserved pension, as my pension should start from November when I left. How do I know that this is correct when they have changed their minds and got it wrong twice before?0
