Washing powder vs tablets?

  • I have started using kitties tip on the other thread - best saving I've made I think. I bought a bottle of ecover yesterday and a bag of soda crystals for £3, two dessertspoons of washing soda and a capful of ecover and the clothes even feel clean and no gunk left in the drawer, they smell nice to and feel soft.
  • I only use powder as I use half a scoop and my washing is fine. I recently changed from Daz which I had always used to try Aldi's powder, which I have found to be just as good except my washing doesn't smell of anything. So, OH has bought a very small box of Bold to try, I'm going to try it without the fabric conditioner as its a 2 in 1 anyway and see what I think but it smells lovely.
I must read the thread on soda crystals though as I have a box of these under the sink that my mum swears by, she bought me a box ages ago and I just shoved it away and never used it.

Well, I think you've all convinced me to give powder a go next time I'm shopping. It certainly sounds as though there's no difference between tablets and powder apart from the cost.

I like the idea of buying cheap liquid at Makro too, but don't you need a special card or something in order to shop there?
  • To be honest (yes you do need a card to go in there) I find that makro has gone up in price and you're better off for waiting until netto or somewhere has an offer on washing powder. I have to travel a fair way to makro's and between all the stores price cutting I don't get the stuff any cheaper for going there.

You can use washing powder for cleaning the sink and bathroom and also for shampooing the carpet.

I use powder but do buy the tablets for DD to use when she's at uni. That way she can just take as many tablets as she needs down to the laundry room . She once left a large packet of powder there and of course it had gone when she went back!
  • Yes. use about half of the recommended amount.
I will tell you what is a waste of money, and that is calgon. The real washing machine repair man (not an actor) told me that the normal washing detergent contains softeners anyway. Also, Calgon is so expensive that getting the repair man out to put a new element will work out cheaper!

I use liquid. I have sensitive skin/ezcema and washing powder (I've tried a few brands) makes my skin much worse.

The only advantage in the tablets is that DH does understand the words "Just put one tablet in" but is inclined to be very generous with powder, whatever I say. I tend to have both so I use the powder (now I am mixing it with the soda) and he uses the tablets!
