Mortgage Payment Protection advice?

My husband has been off sick for six weeks now, is self employed so get's no money, still waiting to hear from DSS regarding SSP. I earn £200.00 per week, our mortgage is £586.00 per month, and basically we have been unable to pay the past couple of months payments. We have spoken to them, but charges are mounting. My husbands insurance does not kick in until he has been off work for 13 weeks!! Will the mortgage company hang on this long? He is suffering with an anxiety condition called depersonalisation, and has become agrophobic (sp?). The financial pressures are not helping and I am worried sick that we may lose everything. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Its in the mortgage companies interests to wait and if you have been a good repayer then they should be understanding. Do you not have any savings which can off set things? Me & my friends always keep a 3->6 month "buffer" in a savings account to at least cover us for a few months such anything like this happen.

We have absolutely nothing!! He has been working on and off for ages, but hiding his illness by saying he has cold etc? He has hidden it well and to an outsider would appear fine but his illness also makes him selfish (not on purpose) so it all rests on my toes, I have applied for numerous weekend jobs but I think that would just about finish me off.

My sympathy, for better or worse I guess.
May I suggest you have another meeting with the mortgage company. Explain your circumstances fully and ask them to confirm what their policy is regarding repossession. Go to citizens advice bureau, they may be able to help expedite DSS or at least confirm what you are entitled to and when you might get it. I am sure you will it reassuring. Your situation is not as bad as you may think and certainly better than many others.
