  • A flexible lunchbreak does have merits, you know. Getting to the bank or the post office before the tellers start going on their own lunchbreaks, shorter queues at the bakers for your sandwiches etc. Provided you've got a rota and the staff use a bit of give & take you might find it a handier way of doing things.

But you don't have a job Conor! :p

Not at the moment but considering I've done an average 50-60hrs a week, I'm probably in credit.

Looking into manufacturing my own job in January. Most likely going to be needing at least one and possibly two staff. Won't be employing any whinging !!!!ies like the OP though. Can't do with morons like that in a new startup.

i think the main issue here is that one day the OP has a set lunch break and the next day they dont
all it would have taken was a week or two's notice to let people know of the impending change and the reason(s) behind it
when people have set schedules they often work things around that so a little notice never hurts

The OP is hardly whinging, just wanting to know the scope of their rights. If it's f*ck-all, fair enough, the OP will have to suck it up and deal with it. Until that point, they are entitled to ask a question on a message board without being shat on, are they not?

If you are planning on managing staff with that attitude you won't get much out of them.

    Hi Spikelad,

How long you have been getting the original lunch break? It may be that this is an implied term and condition and something the employer can't take away without negotiation. An implied term is one that isn't written down but one that is taken as custom and practice within the company.

Also what does it say in your contract ref a lunch break? If it states in your contract you lunch break will be 12 - 12.30 then it's a term of your contract and can't be changed without consultation.

Debt now 20th December 2015 £31677.13 Paid Off to date £33962.09 - just not going quickly enough!

Debt free date July 2024! I don't think so, it'll be going quicker than that!!!

There has been no discussion about this and our site reps attitude is just get on with it and stop complaining.

If there is trade union recognition management have likely bypassed any consultative agreements and simply imposed their will. In light of this and your reps attitude, perhaps it's time to de-select him and elect someone who will represent your interests instead of being a doormat.

  • If you are complaining that you had an hour's unpaid break beforehand, then you are better off as 1. You go home half an hour earlier or 2. Get paid for this extra half hour per day.

At one workplace I used to work, we were given the option of having half an hour's unpaid lunch or an hour's break. As the workplace was in the middle of an industrial estate with no shops for miles, I took 30 mins lunch. I got home earlier and didn't get bored.

At the moment, unless I go out for my lunchbreak, I find an hour is too long.
