halifax is one of the worst banks in the high street - their call centre staff are as poorly trained as circus monkeys and simply do not know how to think for themselves
i once had one of them tell me that a 12% FIXED yearly savings account had now been reduced to 6% and that the money did not earn interest at the weekend !!!!!! this turned out to be utter lies

I must admit I was surprised to see that even Natwest had a better rate at the moment on a 10 year fixed deal and with no horrible £1500 product fee. Having been with Natwest in the past I thought they always had the worst deals no matter what.0

It works fine for me (both standing order and adhoc payments) - it was the mortgage dept call centre that explained it to me -- they said they were trying to reduce the number of people who call to change their direct debits after rate changes.
These are the details I use for paying (I've replaced some numbers with Ns for privacy reasons) - these details can be found when you login to the Halifax website.
sort code: 11-16-72
account: 01250NNN
reference: A/NNNNNNNN-N (my mortgage "roll" number)
If you can't pay from your Halifax current account then worth transferring your current account elsewhere. I suspect it is possible from a Halifax account, their staff sound pretty incompetent at times.0
