Generous Payments for Medical Research

I regularly volunteer myself for medical research - this entails taking a normal dosage of medication and having small blood samples taken throughout the day. Trials I have done so far include Ibuprofen, Mefenamic Acid (a medication I used to use regularly for period pains), and medication used for migraine headaches. During a study you stay overnight on a ward, get all meals free and get to chill out for a few days. You can be paid anything from £400 to £3,000 depending on how long the trial lasts. I was paid £450 for a trial lasting two lots of 3 days (total of 4 overnight stays). I use up half my leave doing these. If you're not happy, you are free to leave at any time and will get paid on a pro rata basis. The organisation is based in Merthyr Tydfil (Wales). Tel. no. for further info is 0800 691995 or web site https://www.simbec.co.uk

What the ****. I suppose it is a freebie if you’re desperate.GONE ENGLAND0 -
I know someone else who's done this in Belfast, but I don't know of any Yorkshire company who does these trials.
I'd be interested in finding out - not that I'm interested in taking drugs of course.

6 DAYS, 4 nights, £450!
Sorry, £75 a day for a 24 hour day at that is £3.12 an hour to take a risk with your health.
I'm not loaded, but that is not enough money for me to risk side effects. Although extremly rare, people do die as a result of these trials. I remember a few years ago a talented university student died during one such trial.
Not for me."If a man says something, but there is no woman to hear him, is he still wrong?"0 -
The uh uplifting effects of sildenafil were first noticed by test subjects at Merthyr's Simbec labs where men testing a drug to stimulate hair growth when they complained about unexpected side effects
and viagra was bornCymru Am Byth0 -
There is a place in Cambridge who are always advertising on the local radio with similar trials. I guess students might go for this sort of thing, but id be too worried about any side effects etc.
Didnt know viagra could stimulate hair growth?! Excellent... will have to use it more often then!0 -
Charterhouse Clinic in London pay for volunteers to take part in medical trials. I was invited to one in Leeds last summer and London last month, but the location and timings didn't suit me.
I would be happy to use some of my holiday from work to do it. If you're getting paid from your normal job anyway, any money earned from taking part in a trial is icing on the cake.
As an aside, I got to know about Chartherhouse by seeing an ad where they offered to pay blood donors. I went up there and got paid £65 for my time and trouble. They aren't always looking for donors, just from time to time. Visit https://www.volunteer4trials.co.uk to monitor the situation.0 -
A friend of mine once signed up to do a three-day, two-night trial with a company in Manchester (sorry, don't know their name). She wasn't allowed to leave the ward and, on the second day, she started getting really claustrophobic and eventually fainted. She was in a terrible state, but was told that if she left before the end of the trail she wouldn't be paid anything at all. She was desperate for the money, so spent most of the last night and day lying on the bed with her feet raised so she wouldn't faint again. Somehow, £75 a day doesn't sound so good after that...0

Great idea..if people are interested.
If more did wouldn't this lead to fewer animals for testing?
*don't know if this is true, just wondering following that program the other night*0 -

hi david, there is a company called covance in leeds. My husband has taken part in a few trials there. Also the company refered to in Manchester is called Medeval (pronounced Med- ev- al not medieval......thank god) my husband has also stayed there, where he was very happy with his treatment. hope that helps! It's definitely not definately!0 -
Also forgot to mention that covance pay £100 per overnight stay, and since you are asleep for most of that time it does work out at quite a bit more than £3 an hour! Plus since my husband is a courier-being injected with pain killers is a damn site safer than driving all day!!It's definitely not definately!0
