hi
on the 6th my gran died due to cancer unfortunately. she wasn't a rich woman but my mother says me and my 3 sisters are going to receive something in her will.
however my mum has asked me to try and find out two things and i thought i would ask to see if anyone here might know:
1. in her little flat there is no sign of her birth certificate and i was wondering where you can get a copy of the persons birth certificate?
2. she used to mention to my mum there was a 2nd account- one she called her 'secret' account, there is no sign of this in her will, nor is there any information about it in her flat... is there anyway of finding out about this somehow?
Please not i am hoping this thread does not sound like a heartless quest to get my mits on what little money she had left- i dont want the inheritance, i want to give it to my mum as she's the one who has been doing the 12 hour trip to see her every second weekend for the past 8 months.
i'm very sad about it as is my family but my mum wants the whole will issue put to a close so that she can begin to get back to some sort of routine again.
thanks for reading,

Don't use gov-certificates, they are expensive. Use the General Register Office instead, 7 pounds, http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp#0
or go to the Register Office she was registered at when she was born (if you know where this is).0 -
I am sorry for your loss.
I think there is somewhere you can trace 'missing' or 'lost' accounts, but I don't know where, sorry. HOWEVER, if this 'secret' account is still active then there should be statements coming (unless your grandma was doing it all online!) Of course the statements may be annual, but if a statement or passbook doesn't turn up in clearing the flat then a statement should, at some point. It would be worth getting the post forwarded - I'd say for at least a year - and looking out for this.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
If you live in a town/city with a number of banks or building societies that she may have used, then you could call with copy of Death Certificate, full name, address and date of birth. They will at least check to see if an account exists even if they cannot provide details of balances etc.
Also a check with National Savings might be worth while. A lot of elder people hold NS certs, bonds and Savings accounts etc.0
