Past Recessions - what were your experiences?

It was to do with the strikes that were constantly occurring at the time – they were a real plague for many people trying to go about their daily lives. It seemed that there would be strikes at the slightest thing. This was when the unions were still very powerful – now we have probably gone too far the other way.
Now that you've reminded me, I can actually remember working by candlelight in a publishing company, and it being quite cold because the heating was off.
In a past recession I did notice a patch when there were many 'for sale' board outside houses. They seemed, in fact, to be outside practically every house on some streets.
Saphire, I ask again, how many boards do you see now compared to last time ?'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -
Compare to last time, how many board do you see now ? It is not exactly brain of Britiain
As to your first sentence, see, for example, post 45, final paragraph.
With regard to your rather idiotic second sentence, I'm still not sure what point you are trying to make, given that I was merely providing an observation in response to the OPs post, not a comparison to what can be seen on streets today.0 -
Just wait till Russia hikes up the price of gas (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7796806.stm) - that could lead to power cuts if we're not prepared to bankrupt the country.
Hey ho, my firm just won a 10 year contract. Sod the recession!0 -

True, apparantly if the Ukraine don't give them the £2 billion they owe by the first week of January they will cut the supplies. The Ukraine is the main pathway into Europe for European gas supply so this is a potential nightmare.
They should just ask GB - he can borrow a few bil to give them.I'll have some cheese please, bob.0 -

IMO it will not be as bad as 1974 (power cuts, 3 day week, 35% inflation, riots, preparations for petrol rationing) only because we still have some North Sea oil.0

I only made one sentence, what is the idiotic secondWhat is wrong with comparing what you saw at the last recession with what you see now. OK let me make it simple, you saw loads of boards last time, how many do you see now?

You're being a bit aggressive about this question. What is the fascination? Poor Sapphire... it's like saying yesterday there were hardly any shoppers in town and today there were loads, and you insisting on knowing exactly hw many more there were than yesterday. Bit bizarre! Is it important?
PS: the second sentence is the one after the first one. I.e. your second sentence was "it's not exactly brain of britain is it?"..... your words, not mine :-)I'll have some cheese please, bob.0 -
mizzbiz, he's acting like this all over the board tonight. I think he's a had a few bevvies.0

Forgive me for my youthful ignorance but can anyone explain why there would be power cuts during a recession? I can understand not being able to afford to put the lights and fire on, but were we unable even to generate enough electricity?
I think it was because of the miners being constantly on and off striking in the 1970s - so electricity was rationed....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
