  • or get a spare set of keys cut and don't send off the log book so if he tries to claim it hasn't been delivered, report it as stolen.
  • Ok so from my understanding if I can get some photo I.d off of him then I know for sure who he is, therefore I'm going to fill out these details onto the log book and send it to dvla? So if he was to deny the fact that he has the van then in theory I should demand the log book back off him, declare it SORN or not demand the log book and declare it stolen?? I personally think I will be ok to be honest, It seems alot of effort for a banging up 12yo VW van?

would you be able to spot a fake Id?

Everyone has their own comfort level with paypal and I am always accused of being too positive about them, but in this case I seem to be in the minority.

This is the rmost common scam going, and add to that the fact that paypal themselves advise against using paypal for collected items and I still think this is a worry. Only a few months ago there was a story on the ebay seller boards about a seller who allowed a buyer to collect a cot and other baby equipment after paying via paypal and just had the whole lot taken back by paypal 3 days later pending proof of delivery. That was less than £100, so a £750 items is even more of a risk.

Let me clarify what Soolin is saying:-

DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL FOR ANY ITEM THAT IS BEING COLLECTED

If you wish to that is your problem and the police will not be interested it will be a civil matter if he does a chargeback.
  • Well it would appear I have no choice as I have to accept paypal if the buyer wants to use it!!!! He is due here at half 3, I'm, fairly decent at spotting fake I.D's had a few years in retail when I was younger so I've seen them all before. I am slighty concerned still but as long as I can confirm I.D then I have address and name and I'll get him to sign something to say he has recieved the van in the current state and he is happy about it.

Please listen to Soolin and Hintza and DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL!

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT PAYPAL FOR VEHICLES!

Getting him to sign something is no good! The ONLY thing Paypal will accept is online trackable proof of delivery.

In all probability you will be fine.

But if he finds a wee niggle he has you over a barrel do you really want to be in that situation? The great thing about advice is you can ignore it but if it all goes wrong please don't say you weren't warned.

I'm sure the regulars on the ebay board are passing out in surprise as I usually defend paypal, but no no no. Paypal offers NO security at all to a seller where an item cannot be delivered and proved via one of only a limited methods of postage to have been received.

It doesn't matter what the van is like if the buyer is a scammer, or if this is a hijacked account accessed by a third party they can pay by paypal collect the van and then reclaim their money. In that instance there is nothing at all that the seller can do to defend the chargeback.

Before we get into silly realms, no , taking a photo of the van being collected, or getting the Queen to sign a statement to say the van was handed over is no good, only online tracked methods of delivery are allowed in the event of a paypal chargeback. paypal themselves say that paypal is not suitable for collected items.

This is the most common scams going and if you have not come across it before I would strongly suggest you get over to the ebay boards (see my signature) as it won't be long before someone posts a horror story about getting caught out.

paypal is absolutely fine in 99% of cases, I use it by choice and not because ebay force me to take it. However you must know what you are doing and how to prtect yourself .

    Spot on

Whey not offer a 10% discount if they pay COD. This not against the rules and you still have Paypal acepted in your listings. it would cost you 10% to use Paypal so offer it as a COD discount and the scam is history.

...the accumulated fees raked off by the eBay/Paypal group have made it a pointless exercise for low cost items - they made more from the sales than I did.

I still flog off an occaisional expensive, attractive item (eg phones). Then I do offer discounts to send cash by direct internet transfer to a bank account I've retained just to use with the internet. I insist that newbie accounts (low feedback and recent accounts with rapidly gained feedback from repeat customers) auction winners either use internet transfer or send me a cheque. I detail this on my "Me" page and on the sale item.

To date, I've not been scammed.....:T I've got my money and the newbie's got his item and his positive feedback. Fingers crossed...
