Did she fill in a P46 when she started, as if she is paying a lot of tax on a part time job she is probably on BR code?

If not this needs to be done; without it the tax office do not know where she is working.
If she has not had any taxable income before starting at her current employment then she can put a cross against option A
A – This is my first job since last 6 April and
I have not been receiving taxable Jobseeker's
    Allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefit
or a state or occupational pension.

This will allow her employer to operate tax code 603L on a cumulative basis and immediately refund any overpaid tax to her.

If she cannot go for A then she will have to choose B and she will be put on 603L week 1 month 1 basis. She will then only pay tax on weekly earnings over about £116 and the tax office will eventually issue a cumulative code to adjust any overpaid tax.
  • She is on the 603L code and does usually earn more than £116... when she works... However since leaving school in july she has only work about 2 months out of the last 6 so her income is unlikely to reach the years allowance level.

I think she must be on 603L week one basis, or else she wouldnt be paying tax. She should check with her employer that she signed the P46 to say this was her first job. If she did so, she should be on 603L cumulative and needs to point this out to her employer. If she didnt sign to say it was her first job, she will need to contact her tax office to get them to issue a cumulative code. Do it now, dont wait until the end of the year.
