Another one for younger children, an empty biscuit tin and a couple of dessert spoons. Mum could make pom poms for ear muffs.

I'm afraid I prefer things children can do on their own, rather than things I have to do with them :o bad mother that I am.
    How's this?

Invent your own imaginary land-draw a map, make up creatures to inhabit it,invent a language/alphabet,write stories about the inhabitants. This is how the Bronte sisters started out.

    Make playdough
    3 cups flour
    1 1/2 cups salt
    6 tsp cream of tartar
    3 cups water
    3 tbsp oil

Mix dry ingredients in a saucepan, add liquids.
Cook over a medium heat until it forms a ball(about 5 mins) it shouldn't be sticky.
Knead food colouring into dough.Store in an airtight container.

I had absolutely hours of fun as a kid playing with mums bed sheets and either the airing rack/kitchen chairs/lounge suite making tents.

Also, my kids love pretending they're doing the laundry with their dolls clothes, some pegs and my airing rack.

Collect pebbles from beach, and paint ladybirds etc on them, then use as door stops/bookends.

  • The sprogs and I used to like playing at shops - they spent ages setting up shelves, putting price tickets on things, going around with a basket, adding up the bill, paying and getting change.

We used to play 'Travel Agents' when the girls were little!

Place names on bits of paper, black board, home made tickets, and pretend (very expensive) prices!

This brings back memories for me - could be developed by going and wiping out the local travel agent of (free) brochures , oh and a pretend phone for all those bookings!!

My girls (9&6) spend hours having dolls tea parties - they even make the invitations for the dolls

    Another one!

Make glue from flour and water, let them have safe plastic sissors, and cut out anything from the Argos catalogue, glue in a scrap book bought from the £1.00 shop!
