I want to build a website and have no idea where to start!
I dont want to pay someone else to do it for me.

I am currently doing a local college course in this. Part time 3 hours a week. Its a start. If you dont want to pay anyone you are going to have to start somewhere and learn how to do it yourself.

    I have just done this:

I bought a domain from ukreg for £3 and then registered for hosting with fasthosts (part of the same company)

I opted for the £3.99 a month option, this gives you three pages on the web under your domain and an email funtion. It also gives you a free sitebuilder piece of software, so if you just want something really basic, there are lots of templates that you can use and personalise. Very easy to use.

I have decided not to do this and have designed my pages in photoshop and am getting a friend to do the coding for me. If you decided to do this yourself you will need an ftp (file transfer protocol) so that once your pages are functional you can upload them. I got mine from https://www.download.com the one I got is called Yummy and is free for 14 days.

There are lots of guides online you can download, it is good to get a bsic handle on html when I first started I got a book from the library there were loads.

    Hope this helps.

I had a website for the last five years built with Microsoft software. I had many compliments for it. Very easy to do if you use a WYSIWYG programme. Cheap to buy and lotsof fun to do.

Have you tried Yahoo GeoCities? It's free and quite versatile.
