Anyone else worried?

I am getting quite worried that I will be out of a job soon. I work for a property auction company and obviously things aren't going so well with nobody buying residential properties. I wasn't so worried until Wednesday when we had our work day out for Christmas and one of my colleagues (who was very drunk) was getting herself in a right state crying saying she thinks she will lose her job. Aparantly she spoke to our boss and he said he will try to hold things together.

Thing is, I am the receptionist/auction clerk there and I was the last one in. There is another girl there that can do my job (she had it before me). I know I will be the first one to go. The past couple of days I've heard the boss mentioning all these sales that have fallen through. I really think I might be out of a job soon. This is the first job I've had that I've quite enjoyed, I don't mind getting up everyday and going in and I get on with everyone there (most of the time ;)) so I will be gutted if it comes to this.

I am moving home in February to a flatshare to save money and if it happens before then I will be stuck as not many people take DSS. :o

Nothing much I can do but wait now! Is there anyone else here seriously worried they may not have a job for much longer?

It is not a problem for me (my role is quite 'unique'!), but I know many people in the same boat as you. Maybe it would be worth starting to look at other options now, in case the worst happens? x
    Gone ... or have I?

No harm in looking for another job that might be safer. Best not let you employer know though.

Don't worry yourself too soon. I work for a housebuilder also as a receptionist. 50% of our staff have been made redundant but I held on to my job because I am the worst paid in the company - and all companies still want to keep a "face on" meaning they want someone answering the phones and greeting people as it shows they are still there and keeping going.

Admin staff in our company have been the last to lose their jobs. technical, and commercial have gone first, but the loose ends left from their departure have meant that there is plenty for admin staff to do.

I always felt bad about the fact I earnt such bad money - but now I am glad. better some money than none at all!

I thought that auction houses were busy during a recession with all the repossessed properties being sold. Isn't it working like that at the moment?

We don't sell repossessions, well didn't, we are looking to get a few now.

But no, we are getting plenty of properties to sell, absolutely tons of the things. They just won't sell. So whilst we are for the moment usually breaking even (we still charge for expenses), we can't keep going like this.

If you are really worried, try looking for another job secretly until you know for certain. it is certainly a worrying time for a lot of us. I was advised in feb when I returned from mat leave that I would be made redundant end sept - great timing as lots of other people were losing their job also. I managed to find another part-time job in a school but my husband works for a housebuilder and was on redundancy threat in July but survived but still thinks his job is iffy next year. I am passed the stage of worrying myself sick and we will deal with it etc when the time happens. Try not to worry too much about it as you will survive if it happens. Good luck.

I agree, maybe look around and see if there is anything else you like the look of. Try not to worry too much about it, might not happen yet :)

I'm currently off sick but my job ends in March and when I first started they went on and on about it being extended, don't worry blah blah and now nobody has mentioned it for ages and I know they know whether it's been extended or not. The thing is i'm considering just handing in my notice because i've been off for almost 3 months and i'm getting no better and the stress of being off is making me feel worse, I know they're fed up with me :o But if I knew the job was long term/perm then I wouldn't quit because I think i'd struggle getting another job with my sickness history. And I love doing that job, first job i've done in a long time that i've actually really enjoyed.

  • No point worrying about something which is beyond your control?

If you are willing to work you can work anywhere, Not necessarily in the UK.

You have to look beyond it all.

If you do end up out of work, Then unfortunateley you will go thru a Bad time, But you have to be strong and Bounce back.

If you decide that you have had enough of working, Then you might be able to claim a benefit, And get a Part Time job, That is if you have a small Mortgage/No Mortgage or no Debts or Loans.

There's more to life than Working all the time.

That's easy to say but it's only natural that people are going to worry about potential/impending job loss and consequently drastic change in income and standard of living.

Better still is to turn the worry into something more positive. Be proactive. Make sure your CV is up to date and ready to be sent out, keep an eye out for jobs, even going as far as actively job-hunting. It is worth remembering though that if you have over two years' service in your current role and are made redundant you are entitled to a minimum of one week's pay for every full year worked (1.5 weeks' pay if you are over the age of 41). Bagging yourself a new job now in an uncertain market may leave you financially worse off if you are made redundant a few months later.

People with families are not necessarily as able to up sticks and leave as those without. A parent may not want to be absent for several months of the year whilst working halfway across the country or even abroad. Given that this a global recession, and not just limited to the UK, you'd be unwise to jump straight into uprooting your entire family in favour of a better life abroad without giving it some serious consideration. It's easy to believe that the grass is greener elsewhere... ;)

I'm not sure that advising people to quit work (simply because they've had enough of it) and claim benefits is the way forward! You only need to read several posts on the Benefits Board to see that life on benefits is not exactly one long party!
If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.
