How long can I keep a turkey in the freezer please?

Hi, Due in the main to my stupidity I have x2 Turkeys....

One I have started to de-frost so we will eat that one...
the other one is fresh so I thought I'd put it in the freezer. How long can I freeze it for please? (Its a crown)..sort of thought of keeping it and wopping it out for Easter or something - when Turkey is a dim and distant memory...
Hanging head in shame for bad bad housekeeping...
thanks
Mx

  • I was under the impression that anything in your freezer should be consumed after 3 months. However I rarely pay attention to that sort of thing and would probably get around to using it for the next Christmas!!!!

Just make sure if you freeze it you remember it's in there!

    Hi mouseymousey,

It will definitely keep until Easter. Food kept in a freezer will not go off providing the freezer is working properly. If left too long or not wrapped properly it can get freezer burn where the quality can deteriorate but that's the worst that can happen.

Last year I bought an organic free range turkey that I picked up on New Years Eve reduced from £28 to £5. I put it into the freezer planning to use it at Easter and forgot all about it. :o I discovered it coming up to last Chrismas, therefore it was kept in the chest freezer for almost a year. It was the best turkey we've ever had. :D

It will "keep" in the freezer for a long time, but after a few months the quality might start to deteriorate. Wrap it well for freezing to keep the quality as long as possible.
