As others have said, when it comes to electrical goods, opening the packaging means they can't be sold as "new" so the assistant would have been opening the box and devaluing the products by about 10% for no reason, because there was a good chance OP wouldn't have actually bought it.

Furthermore, if OP didn't have their own headphones with them and the customer wanted to test the sound, it brings up a hygeine risk, because MP3 players only come with in-ear phones.

I'd advise reading reviews and going somewhere with a listening station, though.

I got a couple of MP3 players from Asda... they had Aqua's "Barbie Girl" and "Hotel California" by the Eagles on both of them!

Take them back. Sale of Goods Act, not fit for purpose, open and shut case as far as I'm concerned. ;)

Thinking about it some more, I wonder if the 'no box opening' mightn't be a security thing to stop staff from opening the boxes and nicking the player?

So Tesco security device to stop staff nicking items is "you must not open the box".... I wonder how a light fingered member of staff would get around that rule?
I might be wrong but wouldn't they just ermm ignore the "DO NOT OPEN THE BOX IF YOU INTEND TO NICK THE ITEM" notice.

I bought a mobile phone from Argos and the lady asked me if I wanted her to open it to have a look at it :)

Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.

I've lost count of the number of things that Ive bought from Argos which have already been opened. I much prefer Tesco's policy.

The point of a security seal is to indicate when the box has been opened. There have been numerous instances of staff stealing items such as MP3 players from boxes and putting an item in the box which is of similar size and weight. If you have a sealed box policy then this risk is minimised as far as customers are concerned.

Don't try to be clever - it doesn't suit you.

A lot of stores, with more expensive items, particularly electricals, will open the box & check the contents in front of you.
However, this is when you have already asked to purchase the item.
I know that Argos do it with watches etc at the seperate counter, & Dixons definitely used to do it.
