Tesco won't "open the box"

What did you expect to learn by opening the box? The player would not be charged and would not contain any music?
Not in all cases, I got a couple of MP3 players from Asda last year (cant remember the brand, Teknika or something) and they not only came with a battery but they had Aqua's "Barbie Girl" and "Hotel California" by the Eagles on both of them!
So in theory, and if I wanted to, I could have "opened the box" and not only seen but heard the players.
Thats if I wanted to...Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
Uh OK. It's never happened on any of the MP3 players I've ever bought.
I think I am going to retract my original post as it seems to be entirely based on false premises.0 -
It is pretty normal for a shop to not open a box and then the customer decides its not for them,0

When I bought my Creative Zen Jukebox some time back, it came sealed in a rigid, see-through plastic carton that I had to cut open with some hefty scissors/shears. A right swine to open, the jagged cut edges of the carton were really sharp! That would have gone back in a carrier bag!“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.
But when I got to be twenty one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”

I think the main reason Tescos wouldnt "Open the box" is because it would then de-value the goods, they would have to reduce the price because its been opened.
I've had an arguement in Tescos before because they sell opened computer games then refuse to take them back because they have been opened and (I quote) "Could have been copied"
So if you shop in somewhere the sells games with the seal broken I would either ask for a sealed copy or ask them to mark the reciept.
I can kind of see the OPs point but to get wound up over it is a bit much, I'd have put my money back in my pocket and walked out.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -

In fact I did get a reply from the office of Sir Terry last year which sorted out the complaint I had, however it was a more serious complaint rather than Tesco policy on them not opening a box
I bought a camera from them which didn't have a display model and was told the same thing, took it home and as it didn't suit me took it back the next day and bought a different one that I could see.0 -

this is the reason why they would open the box, if the item wasn't to the OP's iking then tesco would have lost money on that item as they would have to reduce it0 -

TBH though Tesco don't really provide the type of service the OP wanted. They are able to sell electrical, music, gaming items, etc at discount prices because they buy in bulk and they have a monopoly of shops to sell them in.
It's really more to do with smart shopping. Look around on the internet, find the product you like and then go and view that product in a specialised shop.
I did this when I bought a camera, I had priced the camera online and then went and viewed it at Jessops and then ordered it from Amazon. Saved myself a good £50 doing this.0
