Tesco won't "open the box"

Options
Tried to buy a Sony MP3 player today priced at (reduced) £59.97 from the local Tesco store
Staff wouldn't open box to let me see it (sealed by Sony)
They did not have dummy sample either to view
How can I tell if MP3 player is OK for me?
Telephoned store manager who said
"Buy it, if it doesn't suit we'll refund your money under our 28 day guarantee"
Crazy!!?
I'm without MP3 player
Tesco didn't make £59.97
Thought there was a credit crunch where every penny made counted?
Willing to bet other stores would "open the box"

Is it just me or does this not make any sense?
How can I tell if it's for me?
    Whats for you?

You won't get a response from that email address either.

What did you expect to learn by opening the box? The player would not be charged and would not contain any music?

The trouble is, if Tesco did open the box for you and you didn't want it then the next thread on here would be a long whinge entitled "I bought a MP3 player from Tesco and it wasn't new, 'cos it had clearly been opened".

I can kind of see the OPs point. Surely if they took it home, opened it then returned it if they didn't like it - it's exactly the same as if it were opened in the shop, only without the hassle of return for both parties!

I find alot about an MP3 player is the 'feel' rather than the function (take I-touch for example) so I can understand why folk would want to see the unit.

Tesco's loss however, and OP had the choice (personally when I buy anything I make sure they've a returns policy)
  • I went to Tesco today and they would not let me open up the packet of lemons either.

Yes, point taken but then why didn't the OP do that? I buy media players on the basis of supported file types and sound so opening the box wouldn't be of much use to me.

Thinking about it some more, I wonder if the 'no box opening' mightn't be a security thing to stop staff from opening the boxes and nicking the player?

Saw a bottle of wine in Tesco today. I wanted to smell it to see if it was for me.

Imagine my disgust when tesco wouldn't open it for me to sniff. It was a screw top bottle too, so it wouldn't have done any harm....

No, it's so that when the shop is selling something unopened that's made of various components (charger, remote control, holder etc) it's virtually guaranteed to be all there and a part hasn't been left on the counter by an employee.

Mind you, this was of course a 'post it and run' grenade...

  • Annoying true - but not a big problem - two options are go down the high street and inspect it elsewhere, if its what you want either go back to Tesco's or get the company were you have just been to price match it.

2nd option is to purchase it - open it there and then - if its not what you want ask for a refund - you don't even have to leave the till!
