notice period?

this is for a friend of mine.

if you are paid monthly, but your contract gives a notice period of 13 weeks, do you have to give 13 weeks notice, or can you leave after 4?
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

The notice in the contract is the important thing, not when you are paid.

in terms of finding another job? I would presume prospective employers would be put off by such a large notice period?

It's the notice in your contract that stands. i.e. if it says 13 weeks, then it's 13 weeks.

My last job had 3 months notice (I was paid monthly), but my boss agreed I could leave after 2 months if I finished my project work and prepared everything ready to be taken over.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

that's a shame. I've got the same clause, so will obviously have to bear it in mind too.

For termination of employment its irrelavant on how/when you are paid.

Its your contract of employment you need to adhere to.

If you are the right candidate for the job, the wait is irrelavant.

An employer will know what the norm is in their industry and so will not be surprised if you say your notice period is x as that is probably the same notice period they have in their contracts for their employees doing a similar job

A lot of jobs have 3 months notice, and any decent employer would understand that, particularly if they offer the same notice period themselves.

It's a good job security thing, as if you got made redundant, it would give you 3 months to find something else!!

If you get offered another job, then tell them that your notice period is 13 weeks, but you will attempt to negotiate this notice with your employer and see if you can reduce it.
