Sony PSP or PDA unsure (its for kids Xmas)

I got the kids a 7" portable dvd player for Christmas but unfortunately it was faulty, battery wouldnt hold the charge.

I am now put off them and would prefer to spend a little more for either a PSP Giga or a PDA.

Play have a PSP giga for £200 and have also seen a PDA (500mhz) for Argos for similar value.

Review here http://www.pdagold.com/articles/detail.asp?a=237 (Slightly better model at Argos its premium faster processor)

As I havent had either before, I basically want either for kids to play the odd game but mainly for playing video, od music, photos etc just keep them entertained whilst in home or on the move.

I hear you can also get games, play video clips and route planners on pda. I dont really want to make another bad choice, I dont have the finanaces to make a mistake so would like a device that does what the kids want. Any advcie would be apprepiated. Cheers

  • I would go for the PSP for games and video, however both machines are not really kidst toys. They need looking after to avoid them getting trashed. If your kids are young, I would suggest a Gameboy

Thanks Billy. I have a GBA which I got 2 years ago.

I decided to get a PDA simply because you can do more with it. I have one on order at Argos which hopefully I can pick up (50 miles away) later today, I cant get one via delivery or local branches as theye all out of stock.

I think you made the wrong choice, I have a PDA and never watch movies on it becasue the battery life isnt long enough to watch a full movie, its great for satalite navigation, playing MP3's and word/excel on the go but not really a movie player
you also need to convert the movie to fit on he screen and your memory card.

I also have a PSP and again there is some work to convert a DVD to a video file but there is software you can buy to do it. the other positive of the PSP is that you can buy movies on UMD disk's that you just put in the back. you can browse the interent on version 2 or higher on a PSP aswell. ohh and you can play proper games on there not the games that are available on the PDA.

You may be right John. I made the trip to pick it up. Got home, charged it up. No net access, cant find wireless network at all, although bluetooth worked fine. Instruction are poor, pdf files. Put in a CF card and no kidding I had to get a pair of plyers to get them out as it asked for a driver for a CF card, first I have ever heard a driver for a memory card. I did put them in right way, and card was hardly used and works fine in my camera.

So taking in back tommorow, under the sale of goods act not fit for purpose.

Oh also earphone socket wont take earphones, you have to get a adaptor.

    I get a psp instead.
  • You will be very happy with the PSP, a very serious piece of gadgetry. Buy a screen protector and enjoy.

Thanks I will get a screen protector. I have to wait a few days once I take it back to get my cash back into the debit card so I can buy the psp.

Just hope they accept it, it was very frustrating trying to get the thing to work on wireless I gave up in the end. I have no problem with getting pc's to work or using wireless networks and I quite savvy on that.

I got my money back from Argos, thankfully they had none in stock. I order a psp nect week as I am skint now. Poor kids have to do without this long for there main present from Christmas.

Still extra cash towards a better present will more than make up for it. I just want something to keep eldest quiet when we go to take her to hospital, its boring journey, and hate every minute of it.
  • Got my lads PSP screen protector and one for my PDA from https://www.proporta.com

They are easy to fit, are washable and have a matt finish to avoid glare on the screen
