Ham in my freezer.

Hi All

I have a quick question please. About 2mths ago I froze some chunks of leftover ham joint, will it still be ok to use now if I defrost it.

I was thinking of using it for a soup, if it is ok to use still. What would I put in the soup with it, I don't get much fresh veg but have plenty of frozen (sweetcorn/peas etc.), also have lentils....not sure if any of these would be good with it and would I put the ham in straight away or at the end?

  • The ham will be fine;) Lentil and ham soup sounds like a good idea to me. I'd just shred the ham up and add it to the soup.

I'd add the defrosted ham at the end otherwise it can sort of disintegrate. A tip for the next time you boil a piece of ham: do keep the stock, it's really tasty and makes fantastic soup. Sometimes I make the soup straight away and freeze that in portions or otherwise just freeze the stock (in empty milk carton).

Lentil and ham soup - you'll need some carrots, onions, red lentils as well as your ham. Some butternut squash might be nice in it too.

Ham stock can sometimes be really salty, depending on the brine mix that the ham was marinaded in, so try it first before you freeze it, otherwise you might be taking up room in the freezer with salty stock that you won't use.
  • Lentil and ham soup is very nice. I usually add carrots, onion and celery to mine as far as veg goes. I season it with freshly ground black pepper, some rosemary and a touch of garlic.
    Take the first step.
Even if you cannot see the whole staircase,
    Just take the first step.
