Shopping in Edinburgh - parking?

I'm going shopping today in Ediburgh - should I drive there - does anyone know of any good places to park?
If I don't drive I will have to get the train from Queen Street, again, I don't know where to park in Glasgow?
Thanks!

Hi,
Central Edinburgh is likely to be jam packed with people trying to park to do thier last minute Xmas shopping, so I think your best bet would be to use one of the park and ride sites on the out skirts of the city then jump on a bus into town.
If your driving from Glasgow, then I'd go for Hermston park and ride.

I'm staying 2 nights in Edinburgh on 31 December at The George Hotel travelling up from Cumbria, unfortaunately I have booked this hotel with no car park :-(
Does anyone know where I can park? Or am I better to travel by train? Or even try another hotel with parking?
Any help would be much appreciated0 -

Travel by train. The town is a nightmare at new year to get about on foot never mind a car plus you hotel is slap-bang in the centre of town. That is definately the best option. xx0/2013

I would check with the George. They may have an arrangement with one of the large Car Parks for a special rate.0

Hi,
Thanks for your replies - got to the park and ride, and didn't realise you had to pay to get on the bus - duh! So parked in Castle Gate (I think?) NCP car park in city centre, wasn't too bad actually.

It's £1.10 each way on the bus or £2.50 for a day ticket0

Train. Edinburgh is a nightmare for drivers, expensive too.Under no circumstances may any part of my postings be used, quoted, repeated, transferred or published by any third party in ANY medium outside of this website without express written permission. Thank you.0 -
Best way to get around Edinburgh is a £2.50 day bus ticket, which covers most of the central the park & rides too. Central Edinburgh is pretty small and if you're fit you can walk most places, but it's great to be able to hop on and off the buses for short stretches.
Parking in central Edinburgh is a nightmare, fiendishly expensive, almost all short stay, the place is crawling with wardens and the tram and gas mains projects have bunged up the traffic flow to the point of gridlock. Even the locals who know the good spots tend to use the buses.Val.0
