how about a potato pie or chilli, curry ( pataks paste are good and go a long way ) something thats in one pot or slow cooker so its simple yet tasty. for dessert how about a trifle, chocolate fondue, apple pie, pavlova etc:xmastree::xmassign::rudolf::xmastree:0

Hiya,
I had loads of people around on Sat eve,and we had hot pork rolls!
Big pork joints are half-price in ASDA at the moment. I made a big dish of stuffing (make it slighly 'slopper' than ususal - better to put in rolls and goes further!) and a big pan of apple sauce. A few dozen bread rolls (large 'freezer' packs are cheapest!) and voila!
Cooked the pork long and slow, finishing on high for 30 mins to crisp the skin for crackling - mmmmm! - it was yummy and everyone really enjoyed!
If you have a slow-cooker, you can make great mulled wine in that, and it keeps it warm all evening without overheating!

I had loads (28) of people here yesterday and did lasagne in big foil trays. Not too expensive as plenty of veg in bolognese sauce to bulk it. Served lasagne up in kitchen and then people went to buffet table and helped themselves to leaves, bread etc. Made big bowls of trifle (SP swiss, bottled raspberries from Lidl) and also cheese and biscuits. All went down a treat.0

Doing a hot dish as the OPs have suggested is a good idea, as it's very easy to 'over cater' with a buffet and for some bizarre reason I think people eat more! Some nice bread etc on the side is a good idea.
I had a crowd last weekend and did some different sorts of homemade soup, (YS veg is good for this) and HM bread, some white rolls and some sliced with seeds. Then did some cakes for 'afters'.
I really like the hot pork rolls idea, as it leaves you with useful leftovers."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"
