Abbey breaking cold calling rules

Imagine my suprise a few weeks ago when I received a telephone call out of blue from my local Abbey branch asking if I wanted to review my mortgage. As I do not currently have a mortgage with them and no other products I asked the salesman if he had my express written consent to telephone me. He replied that he did not need it as he had received a list from head office of people to call and that was good enough. I then spoke to his manager who again said that they did not need consent as head office had sent them a list!!!!
So, is the manager of an Abbey branch not aware of the FSA's rules on cold calling or do they just feel that there are enough people who are not aware that they won't get reported.
I wrote a letter of complaint to Abbey on the 10th December and still have not received a reply, so they may just ignore it so that they do not have to inform the FSA.
Has anyone else had unsolicited calls from Abbey?

No but I recently got a credit card from them so its possible that they will I guess. Never in my life have I had dealings with a company with customer service like Abbey. They are absolutely shocking. Incompetence of the highest level.

"Scabby Abbey" living up to the nickname!
  • Are you a customer of Abbey? If so, then it wasn't a cold-call.

It is a cold call if they're offering mortgages.

In the Times and Telegraph money pages, the Abbey are often touted as the worst offender for admin failures and customer service.

maninthestreet, even if I was a custoner of Abbey they have to have my express written consent to telephone me with regard to a mortgage sale. The bigger problem would appear that Abbey know that most people do not know FSA regulations and accept the telephone call and arrange a mortgage through them. If they are happy to ignore the FSA's regulations on this what else will they ignore??

  • I must admit I did not know that the FSA had rules about calling you.
I would have thought they would had been out of order on two counts firstly if you had registered with Telephone preference service or if you had specifically had asked them not to telephone you for marketing purposes.

Amazing they have to cold call when mortgages are so scarce. Or perhaps all the customers who want one are rubbish?

    Trying to keep it simple...;)
