Old Style Cleaning Products - home made?

Hi All,

First time poster so please let me know if I'm in the wrong place!

I'm asthmatic and find that bleachy cleaning products are really affecting my breathing. Has anyone got any top tips for cheap/home made cleaning products that work and won't affect my breathing too much?

    Hi clayremonkey,

    Welcome to MSE :hello:

If you have a look through the Indexed collection, in the cleaning section there are many threads on homemade cleaning products that may help (you'll need to scroll down to see them all). This thread may be useful too:

    Save Zillions On Cleaning Products

I hope you find something suitable.

I also find bleach bad for my asthma. I just suggested them in another post, but soda crystals are really useful. They clean almost anything, and they're entirely perfume and fume free. Not very dusty either, the crystals are too big to get in to the air.

They will do anything you're already using detergents for, like floors, bathroom fixtures, kitchen surfaces and cooker. I also use them to clean the toilet. Plenty of other uses, but these are the main uses in our house.
  • I use vinegar and lemon juice regularly as cleaners.
  • Thanks folks! Now can anyone tell me how to get emails when I get replies to my posts?!?!?! :j

  • Clayremonkey, I'd try Stardrops for your cleaning. Obviously not homemade but very OS and very good. I suffer using chemically smelling products too and now only use Domestos bleach in the loo and plugholes, where it's important, and Stardrops everywhere else. You'll find loads of references to it on here if you do a search.

With re. to the emails, when you click reply, underneath the typing box is 'Additional Options' where you can change the 'Notification Type:' dropdown box to suit you.
  • Thanks so much, I will put all of the above on my shopping list!

I put about half an inch of vinegar and the same of washing up liquid in an old spray bottle then top up with hot water. It cleans everything beautifully especially glass & silver appliances in the kitchen. I just spray it on then polish off if needed.

The vinegar also deodorises the room while your at it. Very useful in this house with 2 dogs & 2 teenagers LOL!!!
