Hi,
I would recommend Michel Thomas CDs - the 8 CD course will be a great foundation course. There are also 'bolt on' CD courses after that for building vocab and advanced verb use.
As for price I think the 8 CD set is £70 on amazon, but there is always loads on Ebay at far better prices.
Listening to these CDs on an mp3 player or during a car journey when you are alone can be surprisingly productive.
The other CDs I'd go for would be the Pimsleur courses, very much the same principle but a more extensive (and expensive) set of courses.

i would second this opinion , michel thomas courses seem really easy , we too are learning german using his cd's in the car........ but we bought them from Costco for £29 inc Vat .... a real bargain.......... do you have a costco near you ?"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page."
happy travels !!

Michel Thomas every time for me and some good deals on E Bay. I just play them in the car. You don't need to work at it.0

The BBC does free language courses, which are pretty good, especially for getting started.
Lots of MP3 downloads and stuff to listen to
I'll declare an interest, that I work for the beeb, but I still think it's a pretty decent site.0 -
oh wow, thanks for that. the good old beeb.0
