Longer term, if Felixstowe are as good as I think you've said in the past there will be opportunities for them as less competitive ports go bust leaving the survivors with a larger share of the market and the ability to levy higher fees.
Felixstowe is going to have greater competition when the new super port is built.
"A contract has been signed to build a £1.5bn super-port in the Thames Gateway, creating up to 12,000 jobs.
The London Gateway container port and business park will be built on the former Shell oil refinery site at Shell Haven in the Thames Estuary, Thurrock. Owner, Dubai Ports (DP) World, says the facility will be the world's most advanced container port and Europe's largest logistics park"
".....technology had advanced and the size of the ships moving around the world had also changed dramatically, and that the London Gateway would accommodate those changes for "many years to come." Denying the facility would have a negative impact on other UK ports he said: "We think the increased competition is good news both for the shipping lines and for the end consumers."

If company's dont they start to struggle and can end up like woolies etc and go out of business, making ALL their employees redundent.
Surely it is important that company's address situations that arise in the global economy straight away so that they are better equiped to face these arwful challenges head on and go from strength to strength.
Agreed , that although it seems the Felixstowe Management might not be handling the situation with individual employees in the best possible way , it is important they make sure the Port is as lean and efficient as possible looking forward .
Ultimately that will benefit everyone , including those made redundant , who will see new opportunities eventually when we move out of recession .
What complicates the positon for Felixstowe is the building of the London Gateway by Dubai Ports . Because they are a holding company of the Dubai and UAE governments , they are somewhat insulated from the World economic position . You can bet the development will almost certainly go ahead and will obviously be huge competition for a company like Hutchison with Thames Gateway , Harwich and Felixstowe .
It would be very interesting to know how the big boys in the Hutchison boardroom are looking at London Gateway . I dont mean local management but the men controlling the overall Company and looking at the bigger picture . How do they see the future of Felixstowe ?
Apparently the first ships are due to arrive at LG in 2011 and the logistics park will open late 2010 .
So Companies will be looking at this as an alternative , especially some of the new Companies that will come to the fore as we move out of recession in a couple of years time (hopefully!)
Having said that , as someone else said , Felixstowe is well placed geographically/logistically and even though they are going to improve the roads around the new terminal , anyone who drives around that part of the m25 knows it is already a nightmare .
So Felixstowe Docks face a challenging future on several fronts and it needs to be as efficient and competitive as it can be to attract new business in the future , for the good of everyone in the town .
Which is no comfort for those facing redundancy unfortunately .0 -
