elc early learning centre keeping 2.5%vat

I have visited my local elc store getting presents in the build up to Christmas. I belong to their birthday club and get sent 20% off vouchers all the time. You can also collect these when spending at mothercare and other stores. They also have lots of reductions on offer and always have. Thier prices have not been changed to reflect the change in vat but there's a sign behind the till saying that adjustments will be made at the till. On checking my reciept I noticed that no adjustments had been made. I called the shop and was told that they do not make adjustments to any items that are on deals. My gripe is that like me most people buy elc goods on deals. The prices are the same as before the vat reduction and the vouchers are still 20% off. I phoned customer services to complain to be told that if I had ordered online or over the phone then adjustments would have automatically been made to goods with deals. They refused to put me through to a manager and said I would have to contact the manager at the store. I phoned the manager who said this had made her Christmas build up time very stressfull. She would happily refund my 2.5% back but they will not be making any changes at the till points. She said it is hardly any extra bother to do this at point of sale but they have been told not to. She didn't know that online or telephone orders were adjusted and was really cross to hear this. I don't want to shop online/over the telephone. I want to support my local community and keep our local people in employment. There are too many shops closing and this is terrible of elc to be encouraging people to stop visiting the shops. As it goes there are very long queues at elc and the toys are flying off the shelves. I thing it's not right that you should have to complain to get the vat cut which is meant to be in our purses not elc's profits. I'm sure they will make the adjustments when the Christmas rush is over and their profits have been boosted. On behalf of all the people who have spent on Christmas presents at elc who have accepted their 'not if it's on a deal' policy I think it's totally unacceptable.

i know what your saying but you have probably spent more on phone calls that you have credited to your account.
    relynutz says it all :o
  • My phone calls cost nothing extra as I have free landline calls with my telephone package. You can get the non-0870 numbers from https://www.saynoto0870.com.
But that's not really the point I'm making. 2.5% isn't much off from my bill but all the accumulated reduction in vat from the many shoppers before Christmas is going to be a nice litle bit of extra profit for elc.
What's the use of a reduction in vat if only some shops take it on board?

  • i agree that ALL shops should be applying the new VAT rate. after all its to help everyone and say you spend £100 instore, like i do at every christmas and birthday then you are entitled to that extra 2% back, no matter how little it is.

 OMG, the Op was just stating a point!!!!!

Op I agree with your bit about it not being fair that they are giving the discount VAT over the phone/online but not in store. It will be the store that suffer if the ELC do not sort this out.

Lets hope that they realise there mistake soon, before we lose another good company.

I bought stuff at the ELC yesterday and they have paper cards that they swipe when you pay and 2.5% comes off the total? In fact the assistant was at pains to point out that I would be getting the 2.5% off. Maybe some stores not operating as they should? But my local one was very scrupulous.

OP don't listen to that horrible little troll.

I think you're right, they should pass it on and I totally agree with supporting the local community. I am so sad about the shops that are closing and although 2.5% isn't a huge amount, it does add up.

ELC Dunfermline definitely gave a VAT back adjustment of 2.5%.

    Maybe you were just unlucky.
