was it really too late to complain?

just a quick question. i tried to complain about 2 endowments which was sold to us, this was early 2004. i was successful with one of them and received £4000. the other one (friends provident) said we had left it too late. i didnt really query it at the time because i was so pleased to win the other case. they said that more then 3 years had passed since they first indicated a possible shortfall therefore it was too late to expect any compensation, was they correct in saying this? also at the end of the letter it says that i had only 6 months to refer it to the ombudsman which has now long passed. (wish i had referred it now) are they right in only giving me 6 months??
thanks
thanks

They are correct.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0

However the Ombudsman (FOS www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk ) has reserved the right to ignore company timebar rules if it sees fit, so if you think you have a decent case, I should take it on there and see.Trying to keep it simple...0

I have just had a letter from the Financial Ombudsman about my Standard Life endowment, informing me that Nationwide Building Society had refused the FO permission to look at my complaint because I had waited longer than the 6 months since the Nationwide had issued their "final response", before I contacted the Financial Ombudsman.
I cannot find anyting on the FO site about extenuating circumstances when the FO could require them to investigate.
Could you please advise.
