Help on the really strange case of JF

in Cutting tax
Hi everyone,
I'm from abroad and I am completely lost.
MY CASE
I have been here in the UK for about a year now, first looking for job. In the meantime I did some minor freelance work ranging 30 to 150 pounds monthly. After which I found a job on a three month contract, and decide at the end to quit it and look for other one because of commuting matters (I had to commute everyday brighton-london). It wasn't really worhty since I spent like 300 pounds monthly on seasonal tickets out of an average of 600-700 (after taxes cuts from my employer).
Now I decided it to give it a try on the self employment stuff.
When I first came to the UK I was unsure on whether or not to stay. But still, I kept withdrawing some money on my foreign accounts and transferred the money to my UK bank (opened in february) so I could keep doing some transactions (food, lettings, goods, etc.). Not much really, say an average of 200 or 300 monthly.
The other thing is, my wife didn't have a visa that allowed her to work in the UK, so she have been looking after my cousin's child as a payment on our room at the house. So we don't have a letting agree since we're a family, but still are paying for it somehow. The thing is I can't justify expenses on renting a room, since there are no movements stating this.
I have been receiving as well help from my family here (another average of 350 monthly). Is the taxman having a look at those figures or only on the money which is constatable on invoices? Because I could hardly live on it and I cannot imagine how life's would be if we were giving away part of that money on taxes.
To recap: I've been putting abroad money on my account, I've been receiving help from family, I've been paying a room but without any statement saying so (neither council tax stuff, etc.). what would you say is my situation if I register now as a self employed?
MY FUTURE
I intend to work on all media related stuff, from Photography to web design and PR for spanish speaking countries.
By the moment I'm writing this I have a contract to work 30 hours/month for a company that will be paying me 460 gbp for that work. 360 will be for my work and the extra 100 is for communication expenses (calls, etc.).
I do as well have a couple of agreement for website production for the next year.
I have NO IDEA about all the taxes, vat, ni stuff accountancy, so I think I would have to hire an accountant for that. I did some research and found the umbrellas companies, but I think they aren't worthy for me now, until I have at least two contracts or more, because they'll take a "big" slice of my payment by this moment apart from taxes and ni.
Any ideas, comments, explanations, suggestions, etc, would be HIGLY appreciated.
Thanks all.
looking forward to hear abour resources, ideas, etc.

It sounds as if you are non-UK domiciled. I cannot tell if you are UK resident or ordinarily resident.
On the assumption that you are resident you have remitted foreign curreny gains - so these will be taxable.
If you do not wish to claim the remittance basis, you would report worldwide income & gains in the UK on a UK tax return.
You will of course need to register as self-employed.0
