    Non-alcoholic?! That'll be the kiddie's version :D

Why not make it yourself? The real thing is a bit of a faff to be honest (though divine!) but you can whip up a perfectly acceptable one without all the fuss and you'll get a good enough idea of what it's like.

This looks like a good range of recipes - try the 'easy' one.

Sounds good. Egg white as the egg substitute perhaps, but what instead of the creamer?

glad it's not just me who has been looking and failing to find...i grew up in the states and just *need* a carton of hood egg nog!

tried to make one that you cook so the kids could drink it without fear of the raw eggs, but it went horribly wrong and curdled. i'm going to risk the raw eggs and make another batch of non-cook stuff when i buy some more eggs!

As an American, I just wanted to say that most Americans get eggnog in cartons (like milk cartons) which is non-alcoholic and then serve it with a bit of ice cream (optional), a bit of rum or brandy, and a sprinkle of nutmeg on top. You can get eggnog with alcohol already in it, but it's usually not as nice. Eggnog does have a similar taste to Advocaat, but it's not exactly the same - I love eggnog but hate Advocaat, for example!

Most Americans don't like making eggnog from scratch because of raw eggs and the link to salmonella. In the UK, the lion mark means that the hen that produced the egg has been vaccinated for salmonella (they test hundreds of thousands of marked eggs every year and haven't found any cases of salmonella yet). I actually think that homemade eggnog tastes better, but that's probably because I'm more used to it now!

My tip for homemade egg nog is to whip everything pretty lightly (I find the mixture separates if I whip the egg whites and cream too long) and to use a spiced rum for extra oomph. And if you don't have nutmeg to sprinkle on top, use cinnamon or even cocoa powder - otherwise it's too bland!

It has reduced fat creamer in there when I read it- is that not what you meant?
