It was the 'must have' luxury item of the 80's but now filter coffee makers have dropped so rapidly in price that if your palette prefers a smoother textured flavour compared to instant coffee, one can now be nabbed for under a fiver in-store at Argos.

Although a pretty basic machine, the Cookworks XQ663 does the job with its anti-drip feature, water level gauge and keep warm function. Up to 10 cups of coffee can be made at once and stock is widely available across all stores (it's sold out online), but make sure you use Argos' online reserve and collect facility to find a convenient branch to pay and collect it from to avoid a wasted trip.

It's also worth considering that although it won't be the end of the world if you use instant coffee in it a few times, it does defeat the purpose of owning a machine so remember to buy filtered instead.
