B&Q loft insulation+Cavity wall service. To good to be true?!

MoneySavingInsert.com Insert...

Due to the cold weather these last few weeks if you’re thinking of adding insulation to your home it’s possible to get the work done for around £200.

Both B&Q, in conjunction with British Gas, (search for Installed Insulation”) and Tesco have offers to install loft and cavity insulation for a fixed price of £198 each, no matter whether it’s a 1 bed flat or a 5 bed house. This price includes all of the materials and installation. The bigger your ouse is, the better this deal will be. However you might be able to get it cheaper so do get some independant quotes first.
What else do you need to know
  • Both: The service is only available in mainland Britain. Tesco also covers the Isle of Wight.
  • B&Q: There may be extra charges, for example additional sq meterage, and if you already have insulation it will be topped up to the recommended 270mm.
  • Tesco: The insulation is free for those over 70 or on benefits, including tax credits (check if you qualify).
There may be extra costs if you need more than maximum meterage for your house or flat size.
The offer is only available for homeowners, residential landlord or private tenants and not for council or Housing Association tenants.
You can only have the loft insulation if you already have less than 150mm of existing insulation.
Insulate your water pipes too

One downside to adding extra insulation to your loft is that water pipes above the insulation are more prone to freezing and in extreme circumstances they can burst. A simple measure is to insulate your pipes too, which can be done for around £10. More details from the Energy Saving Trust.
You may be able to get the work done for free

Before paying to have any insulation work done check the Energy Saving Trust grant search tool to see if you can get a grant. This and other home improvement grants are discussed in the Grant Grabbing Guide.

Back to the original post...

I've just been on B&Qs website and spotted that they do loft insulation fitting (includes 270mm insulation) for £200. They also do cavity wall insulation for similar price. Both services are on 'sale'. Does this seem to good to be true? Anyone used the B&Q service?
