I wanna do a Ict course!

At the moment i'm working in Retail and no offence to anyone thats in it or has been in retail fulltime but i bloody hate it  i've always liked Computers and find it rather Easy getting the information stuck in my head. But i don't wanna go to college fulltime it just isn't me,I'd prefer to pay/work and do the course in my own time while getting help from the company!

But My Question is does anyone know of a cheap/reliable/Helpfull place to try?

I'm 17 and I'd love to do Webdesign/Programming/Flash or be a PC Engineer :money:

First thing to do is speak to your HR/Benefits dept and see how their scheme works.

After that, get a prospectus from local colleges & distance learning, best try either:

    www.learndirect.co.uk
    www.hotcourses.co.uk

Choose what you want to do, see if your company will sponsor you or what other help you are entitled to.

Be careful though, if the company sponsors you, they will expect you to work for them for usually at least a year after completion of the course!!

I was going to get my company to sponsor me but ended up paying to do a degree course myself so I was flexible to work with whomever I choose during the course.

    Good luck!!

Try learn direct - they usually have details of all sorts of courses. Go to the website or ring 0800 101 901 (different numbers in different UK countries).

  • The best thing to do is search your local colleges etc, most have there courses displayed on the web, they also do night class' and study from home class' the only other option is the open university (if you are looking for higher courses).

edit: sorry i must type faster lol

    Do you live in Scotland?

ILA Scotland offer £100 to ANYONE wanting to do an ICT course.

They also offer £200/year to anyone who earns under £15k per annum to do a course of their choice.

I am not sure if England/Wales/NI has an equivalent. the learndirect site shoud advise you of that though.

  • Thanks for some of the tips,I don't think my company will sponsor me as I'm only at a little store as a sales assitant.I live in birmingham
  • I work at an ICT outreach centre for a college in the West Country and we offer FREE computer courses for beginners through to experts wanting ECDL Advanced.

Attending 'evening' courses at the mainsite will mean students have to pay. Our outreach centres, five in the district, are open for 64 hours a week with no fixed lesson time, you learn from a workbook.

So find out the website of your local college.

    Hi

Have you thought of being a software tester??

I'm a tester for a large medical software house in Leeds. I started testing working for a UK bank and had no qualifications.

You should be able to find a testing job requiring no testing experiance from https://www.jobsite.co.uk or itjobboard.co.uk or .com.

You will be able to learn as you go and then do ISEB testing qualifications in order to move on.

You will also be surrounded by developers who will be able to give you advice and explain coding/sql etc and you may even be able to progress from testing to development in the company or via a technical tester role.

In my company we have testers, senior testers and technical testers.

Seniors also look after the work loads of patches for the team they are in and also double check patches before they are sent out.

I'm responsible for sending the patches out to client sites over the UK and putting them on internet servers etc to be picked up automatically (like windows update).

We also have testers that write release notes and help files to go with the patches to explain what they fix or how to use new options.

Anyway, as I said many companies take testers on with no experience as its something that you only really learn when you are doing it.

    Good luck
