Told they might not get paid for work in January

Hi,

My friend has been told by their employer that they, and the other employees (around 5 in total), may not be in a position to pay them for the month of January.

What should my friend do?

Thanks.

Don't go to work in January!!

Seriously I would look for another job ASAP - easier said than done, I know. It's not looking good if the employer is struggling to pay wages.

    Thanks.

What if the notice period is one month, my friend quits at the end of December, and then the company are able to pay the January wages after all? Wouldn't my friend then be in breach of their employment contract by terminating it without the agreed notice period of one month being carried out?

Equally, I appreciate the risk of seeing out the notice period, which would put them into (say) this time in January, and then not getting paid.

Wouldnt the company be in breach of contract for not paying wages? Seriously if it sounds like the company is going under, your friend needs to jump ship whenever possible...

The same thing happend to my husband a while ago.. Told that there was a cash flow problem and just hang on in while they sorted it out.. He had no wages for 5 weeks and then the company went in to liquidation....He was one of the lucky ones and got another job straight away.. Others never got a penny back and are still out of work.

Id be looking for a job now, get onto the agencies and register on sites like reed, jobsite etc, check the local paper when they have the jobs section. Even if your friend can only get temp work when she leaves it would be something
