How long should I wait?

I asked my boss about the possibility of a payrise 3 weeks ago and she said she would have to ask her boss and then get back to me. I waited a week then asked if she had any news but she said she hadn't seen him to ask.

She then had a week away on holiday and returned on Monday this week but still hasn't said anything. Her boss has been in the office this week several times but I don't know if she has spoken to him yet or maybe she's forgotten all about it.

Should I say anything to her or wait till she brings up the subject? The suspense is killing me.

  • hi fed-up,

You should certainly ask her again, as with Christmas coming up it will eat you away if she says nothing.

So much depends on the culture of a workplace as to how hard you push it - only you can know this. It may be worth trying to probe why she has not come back to you, ie are pay rises a problem at the moment in terms of the recession.

It could just be that she is choosing the best time to speak to her boss, as maybe what you earn could impact on whether she asks for a pay rise for herself at the same time - so she wants to catch him in a good mood.

Maybe the office Christmas party;) ?

Hope you get your just desserts.
