Was I successful at interview?

I had an interview for a big promotion at work on Monday morning, there are some external candidates being interviewed for this position also so it has to be a two stage interview process, Mondays was stage 1. I didn't feel that I had done my best as there were a couple of tricky questions but when I went over it with my manager afterwards (he hadn't interviewed me), he told me the answers I gave were correct

I haven't heard ANYTHING yet from HR, my line manager told me that it was no secret that one of the external candidates who was interviewed last week has not got through to stage 2 but at the stage I spoke to him he hadn't heard about me (I phoned him on the way home on Monday to let him know how it went)

They told me at the end of the interview they would let me know 'shortly' as they still had some other people to interview and that the second interviews would be after xmas, but what does shortly mean?

I just want to be put out of my misery now!, I am wondering all sorts, I did initially think I wouldn't get through but after speaking to my manager he has got my hopes up, I have phoned him today to ask him about something else and have left him a message to ring me back but he emailed me instead and hasn't mentioned anything, is this a bad sign? (I am being paranoid I know!)

Surely if I was unsuccessful though they would have let me know by now? esp if its no secret the person they interviewed last week has not got through, surely that means they must know they were unsuccessful?

I know the second stage interviews will take some organising for after xmas, perhaps this is why they have not let me know yet?

any ideas?

I recently interviewed for an internal position and was on ABSOLUTE tenterhooks :j (that's me on tenterhooks btw) afterwards so I know what you're going through.

What I did was email the person from HR who interviewed me and basically said "Thanks for interviewing me, the position sounded great and I'm really interested, and look forward to hearing from you soon". Bit cheesy, but hey!

She got back to me saying that she wasn't able to give me a response straight away as the other person who interviewed me was out of the office for the rest of the week so they'd get back to me on Friday (I was interviewed on Tuesday morning and emailed on Wednesday afternoon).

In the end they contacted me Thursday lunchtime to say I was successful :T :A ...I started in my new job on Monday (and love it)...and now I'm at home with pneumonia :rotfl:
