I made a moneysaving christmas tree

Out of a twig from my garden. I know it's not "the same" but it's better than nothing, which is what i would have had otherwise! here it is:

Had the decorations already or I would've made them too :)

Happy christmas everyone!

I've done the same before, but not for moneysaving, just because I like a more minimal xmas look (shame the kids prefer the hideous cluttered look now ;) )

I've used to paint my twigs white or silver, depending on the colour of the decorations.
  • oo i think it looks quite cool .. would look great all year round with a few little lights on xx

It's great! I used to spray mine silver and they looked better than the silver twiggy things that can be bought in trendy shops for about £15. What a joke! A can of silver spray from our loal cheapee shop was less than a quid and the large twig/branch was a freebie from a walk i went on.

when i was growing up - there was a year my parents could not afford a tree (my mum always has a real tree - only now they are rooted and last 3-4 years in a pot before being planted in the garden) my dad got a bit of a log from some one who was cutting down a tree and a whole lot of twigs. he used half the bit of log and drilled holes in it for the twigs and sprayed the whole thing silver and we hung the christmas decorations on the twigs ... it looked lovely - this thread has just reminded me of that i must have been 4 at the time.

i love your twig - it reminds me of a happy childhood christmas when my parents worked really hard to do their best to provide christmas for me and my brother... its all coming back to me now the reason we could not afford a tree was my mum was no longer working as my brother was a baby and my parents were saving hard to buy a decent sized family home.. i had a bike for christmas (my first one) it was second hand but my painted it my favorite colour and spent hours making it just so.

That's very stylish I reckon, and I luuuuuuurve your little reindeers!!!! they look rather like the ones Nigella had on everything on her cooking show earlier.
  • Thanks everyone :) I seem to remember the reindeers weren't very MSE but at least they'll last forever!

I love the idea of spraying it silver too - I might try it next year when i have more time and am better organised. This was just a spur of the moment thing - haven't been feeling very festive for various reasons and wanted to do something to cheer myself up for free so i jsut lopped it off the hedge in my garden!

    sillyvixen - that's really sweet :)

  • My Mother used to do this years ago, but she would paint or spray it Gold or Silver.
