Royal Mail Special Delivery - claim for lost cash?

I am not sure if this is the right place for this question but here goes…

I had to send some cash to a friend in the post, so I used special delivery. I posted it on Monday and yet the track and trace number is still showing that the item has not even been posted and the item seems to have disappeared.

I know that SD covers up to £500 in value, but I would like to know what proof you have to give? I only had £100 in the envelope but do they ask for a receipt for the cash or something like that, as I don’t have a receipt at all.

    no track at all?
that is weird and a little worrying.
sounds like it may have been put in with normal post in error TBH
i would get onto customer services and ask them to chase it up
ive changed duties so no longer have access to the intranet to do a full track :(

Yes it is weird - i posted two other letters the same day, sd, and they are showing as delivered so maybe the guy put it in the wrong mail bag or something. Rubbish.

Do you know about what happens if I need to make a claim? How will I be able to demonstrate to Royal Mail how much money was in the envelope?

Hi I'm pretty sure you can't make a claim for cash lost in the post, even with SD.

    According to this you can...
    Which service to use?

We recommend that you use either Special Delivery 9am or Special Delivery Next Day to send any valuables or cash. With these services you can buy up to £2,500 compensation for loss or damage and up to £10,000 compensation for consequential loss.
  • Oh. yes - so it seems, Ok I have no idea how you prove what was in there though.....

its an interesting question and i cant give an answer :o
however i know the banks use it up to £2.5k (and above as we have had split bags) so perhaps you wont struggle with the £100
    however it may still arrive
once it hits the delivery office(or an MC worker spots it) then it should get passed to priority services and will once again 'become' an SD item

Sorry to hijack this thread but i also have a question about SD and custardy seems to have insider knowledge.
ON Monday I paid for SD item at my local P.O and also bought stamps and the like. I did not check my machine printed receipt until yesterday when I wanted to confirm delivery. Problem is there is no Track and Trace number on the receipt like there normally is, just separate amounts for the items I purchased and the SD postage. Is it going to be possible for the Royal mail to confirm delivery for me.? I have no concerns that it hasnt been sent SD as I saw the girl stick on the silver SD label

unfortunatly not a chance. tracking numbers are not tallied with addresses AFAIK
however given the post offices now confirm the address with the SD item then maybe its changed
wouldnt hurt to ask customer services

The SD tracking number goes on a separate receipt of its own which is printed when the clerk confirms the postage label has printed correctly - then the SD postage goes on the cash receipt at the end with anything else you have bought.

Maybe the SD receipt is still at the PO - they might not have thrown it away but kept it in case you came back for it.
