How many home consoles have Nintendo released?

Going for 5 from here :

[The Wii is Nintendo's fifth home console, the direct successor to the Nintendo GameCube, and able to play all official GameCube games.]

It’s post-Xmas dinner, you’re playing your ‘Grand Theft Auto IV’, and you realise your jeans are suddenly tightening up on your waist. Fancy losing some weight without having to leave your video game? Say hello to jOG.

jOG is a small pedometer based game controller that allows you to control your video game character movement by running. Make sense? Good.
You plug it into your console, chuck down your original controller, and run away using the jOG. It is, after all, the “fun, healthy and easy way to play video games.”
Priced £19.99, it's available for the Wii and PS2 consoles, and can be used over and over on any games on these formats. Head here for more information.
We’ve got five of these blighters to giveaway. To win, answer the question below and submit away!

Forgot about Game Boy - does that make it 7, with the NES?

wiki says wii is 5th home console though. DS and that might not count as home as they are portable?

I did 5 as well, which was why I was glad to find the Wiki reference, although it is still open to discussion. You could argue that Game Boy and DS aren't home consoles, so with the NES (my first one) that's 5.

I've done 1 for 5, 1 for 6, though i'm thinking it might even be 8 now lol. Question is abit unclear, wish options were 5, 200 or elephant then we would know :D
  • Just found this:
    1. By 1983 Nintendo had decided that they should produce their own home console rather than just the games and arcade machines, so they set about producing the Famicon, with Donkey Kong, its sequel Donkey Kong Jr and Popeye bundled with it.

    2. Nintendo then turned their attention to the North American market, where, after abortive attempts to co-brand with giants Atari, they finally unveiled the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

    3. focus at Nintendo at that time was on the handheld console market – which they entered in style in 1989 with the Gameboy.

    4. Nintendo launched a new console in 1990 – the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES – somewhat predictably)

    5. Nintendo, mindful of their slipping status in the console market, released the Nintendo 64 in June 1996

    6. With the console using discs not cartridges, and also usable as a CD player, Sony hit the ground running and Nintendo found themselves with a massive competitor.
This became even more apparent with the next generation of consoles – the Nintendo led with the GameCube

    7. GameCube did not enjoy the success that was expected of Nintendo, but their handheld market was growing ever stronger with the DS (Dual screen) released in 2004 to massive market acclaim.

    8. But just as people were beginning to write off Nintendo, it did what it had managed to do throughout its illustrious history – innovated. Rather than take on the increasingly high spec Playstation and Xbox who were competing with the PS3 and Xbox 360, Nintendo developed the Wii.

So Could the answer be 8 :confused::confused:

Just to clear something up here, the Famicom (not Famicon), is the original Japanese version of the European and American NES systems. So I would count that as one.

Going by my knowledge and previous Nintendo fanboyism (they lost me at the DS. Off to Sony and MS I went):

    1. NES - Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom)
    2. SNES - Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super Famicom)
    3. Nintendo 64
    4. Nintendo GameCube
    5. Nintendo Wii

So they're getting a big fat 5 from me :D
