UPS - not heard anything for 2 years

Hi all, bit of background.
At the end of December 06, my Husband's Mother sent us a parcel from USA.
It arrived here on January 2nd by UPS. However when the delivery guy brought it, he wanted £107.xx before he would hand it over.
There was no way we could afford it so we sent it back.
(The value was at 1000 USD, which is way more than it was worth! Turns out the woman at Staples wouldnt take no for an answer when trying to persuade her to send it with this value as his mother would receive a lot of money if it was lost!)

A few days later they phoned my mother in law and were very abrupt on the phone. She got angry and said something about extortion(sp?) and said they were lucky she didnt have time to take them to court. eek1.gif
Then UPS called us and asked if we still wanted the parcel, which we did. We asked if they could hold it for us while we get a revised invoice, to which they said "We dont hold items, we just resend every few days" And they arrange to resend it a few days later.

We have Husband's mother contact Staples who she sent it with to get a revised invoice, meanwhile the parcel is redelivered a few times and always sent back to UPS.
We find out Staples sent the revised invoice to Customs and at the end of January UPS redeliver the parcel and the guy just hands it over (to my Dad!) and doesnt ask for any payment. So we figure it must have all been sorted out and they got the revised invoice after all of our trouble. Guess again.

7th March 07 we got a bill for £107.xx for the delivery of the parcel.
My Husband called numerous times and explained, was put through to many different people and eventually to a phone which just kept ringing.
We called some months after that and were told by UPS that they were seeking adivce from their legal team. Called again after some months and we were told it was no further forward.

Since then we have heard nothing. Not sure what we are supposed to do.
We fully dispute the charge as the parcel contained an old harddrive of my Husband's from when he lived at home, so it had no value at all to anyone but him.
Where do we go from here?
Thanks

  • wait 4 more years, the debt is gone. The bill is probably import duty on the notional value of the package.

Why is sending/receiving stuff from the US such a pain in the A**! The only item I ever sent an Ebay item to the US it wasn't received by the buyer and a colleague has had a similar experience. I wouldn't touch anything involving using the US postal service again.
