Getting a Tax Rebate while on Jobseekers Allowance

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me with my situation.

I left a job in Jul 2004 to study (a private course at my own expense) and since May 2005 I have been on Jobseekers Allowance. I believe I am owed a tax rebate since I paid tax from April-Jul 04 and was out of work (but not claiming benefits) til the following April 05.

I obtained a form from the tax office but it stated 'do not claim if you are on JSA'. Can anyone advise me whether I am still entitled to a rebate or does my claiming JSA prevent me from getting it?

Is it simply a case of going to my local tax office to sort it out?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

You may still get a tax rebate but it is sorted out by the Jobcentre as jsa is taxable income.

    this page explains it

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Thanks for the link, it was very helpful.

Does it not make a difference then that my period of work and my claiming of benefits were in different tax years?
  • you can claim for the previous year, but for the current tax year, if you are still on JSA at the moment the job centre will deal with it at the end of the year, if you are still on it
  • I'll go to the tax office then to try and sort out a claim for the previous tax year, thanks for your help, it's much appreciated.
